Cooperation for Development

EWB involvement in the South focuses in the joint work of the partners, local NGOs and EWB. All together provide solutions to the identified local needs.

These local organizations are essential in the fight for claiming the rights to universal access to basic services. The implementation of cooperation projects together with community-based organizations ensures that the infrastructure and technology to be installed will tackle the problems identified. Not only this infrastructure and technology will be appropriate and understood by users, but  the same people will be responsible for its management and maintenance.

Following the work developed during 15 years in development cooperation projects, EWB identifies the need for a more holistic vision through development programs. These programs include pre-planning and beforehand analysis that encompass the needs of the area. We address the situation with all its actors: communities, governments, NGOs, universities and others, in order to integrate them in the same direction. Therefore, this planning program is additional to the development of infrastructure.

EWB is commited to long-term development since our actions aim to ensure sustainability. The institutional strengthening as well as coordination between different actors are the main guarantee for the sustainability of actions.

Likewise, EWB is responsible for the creation of entities which run the implemented systems. These systems are based on community-based organization (as in the case of Water Committees). EWB also fosters associativity between systems and collaboration and / or integration between municipal bodies with the help of local government.

EWB strategy involves capacity building in issues related to the access to basic services. EWB promotes the strengthening of community-based organization for social action. In this process, communities become aware of their rights and duties.
